Kootenay Yoga School

Continuing Education

Forever Students. Forever Learning.

Graduating from your 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training was never meant to be the end of your education — it was the beginning.

Whether you are a Kootenay Yoga School alumni or completed your 200-hour training somewhere else in the world, you are invited to join us for our 50-Hour YACEP Supported Study Programs. These continuing-education experiences were created for teachers who want to stay curious, deepen their knowledge, strengthen their teaching skills, and explore subjects that deserve more time than we can possibly give them within a foundational 200-hour YTT.

Our philosophy is simple: great teachers remain forever students.

Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Requirements

Yoga Alliance currently requires Registered Yoga Teachers to complete continuing education during each three-year registration cycle. Current requirements include 45 hours of yoga teaching and 30 hours of yoga training, with the training directly related to Yoga Alliance Educational Categories. Each three-year cycle begins from the teacher's registration date and resets every three years.

Our programs are designed to make continuing education something you want to do — not simply hours you need to collect.

One Program. Two Ways to Learn.

Study From Anywhere

No flights. No accommodation. No need to rearrange your life.

Enroll in your chosen 50-hour Supported Study Program and complete it independently from home, at your own pace.

You will receive the course materials, structured assignments, readings, research expectations, reflection work and final integration requirements, with guidance and program coordination from Kootenay Yoga School along the way.

Work from your kitchen table, your favourite coffee shop, your bed or your local yoga studio. Your learning is self-driven, allowing you to move through the material in the way that best suits your schedule.

OR — Come Study With Us

Turn your continuing education into an adventure.

Complete your Supported Study in person at one of our Kootenay Yoga School training locations:

  • Isla Mujeres, Mexico

  • Joshua Tree, California

  • The Kootenays — Christina Lake, British Columbia, Canada

Our in-person YACEP programs operate alongside our regularly scheduled 200-hour Yoga Teacher Trainings, giving you the opportunity to return to the energy and community of YTT while pursuing your own independent area of study.

  • Take your manual to the beach.

  • Research beside the pool.

  • Find a quiet corner of the property and disappear into your studies for the afternoon.

  • Join morning practice.

  • Share what you're discovering through collaborative activities.

  • Connect with teachers and students.

  • And, when schedules align, bring your learning full circle by presenting your work to our YTT community.

An immersive learning environment.

Flexible Dates. Three Locations. Your Pace.

Our booking pages allow you to select your preferred location, dates and accommodation/occupancy option.

Supported Study opportunities are offered throughout the year, with the exact on-site experience dependent upon our YTT calendar. Because every YTT schedule is a little different, available meals, excursions, ceremonies, workshops, practices and opportunities for collaboration will vary depending upon the dates and location you choose.

That is part of what makes these programs fun.

You might spend one afternoon researching beside the Caribbean. Another student might work from a hammock in Joshua Tree. Someone else may be preparing their final seminar beside the lake in British Columbia.

Different environment. Different timeline. Same 50-hour learning commitment.

Our team will coordinate your dates with you so you know what will be happening on-site during your stay.

Stay for a Week — Or Make an Adventure Out of It

A single 50-hour Supported Study can generally be progressed through in approximately one focused week, depending on your pace and completion of all requirements.

Prefer more space?

Stay for two weeks or longer, slow down your studies, enjoy the property and surrounding area, and give yourself time to integrate what you're learning.

Students booking two or more weeks are eligible for a 25% extended-stay discount.

You may also choose to complete two different 50-hour YACEP programs during an extended stay, or begin your studies with us and finish remaining independent work from home.

Injury-Aware Teaching

Learn More

Deep Knowledge • Safe Spaces • Empowered Teachers

Yoga culture can sometimes place enormous attention on the peak posture — the deepest backbend, the strongest arm balance or the most visually impressive expression of an asana.

Injury-Aware Teaching asks a different question: How do we help students develop a relationship with movement that can serve them for years to come?

This 50-hour Supported Study explores functional anatomy, common injury considerations, sustainable movement, modifications, sequencing, individual variation, contraindication awareness, inclusive teaching and the language we use when discussing bodies and movement.

Rather than teaching students to diagnose or treat injuries, the program focuses on the yoga teacher's appropriate professional role: observing, adapting, offering meaningful choices, communicating responsibly and recognizing when something belongs outside our scope of practice. Yoga Alliance specifically states that its Educational Categories do not include diagnosis or treatment of physical or mental health conditions.

By the End of Your Study

Students should be able to demonstrate a stronger understanding of functional anatomy and individual variation; recognize common injury considerations relevant to yoga environments; create thoughtful modifications and alternatives; develop more adaptable sequencing; distinguish challenge from warning signs that warrant changing or stopping an activity; communicate without diagnosing; and build classes that prioritize choice, sustainability and longevity over achieving a particular shape.

To Complete the 50 Hours

Your program combines 50 documented hours of morning asana observation/practice, manual study and assigned reading, independent research, written and practical assignments, mentor support, seminar research and preparation, movement-class development and rehearsal, reflections and final assessment.

Your final integration includes the development of a 90-minute educational seminar and a 60-minute physical movement class demonstrating how you have translated your research into meaningful teaching.

Students must complete the required work and demonstrate the learning outcomes before receiving their completion certificate. Yoga Alliance requires YACEP providers to issue certificates only after successful completion of the applicable course hours and requirements.

Nervous System-Informed Yoga

Learn More

What changes when we stop looking only at the posture and begin considering the whole person experiencing it?

Nervous System-Informed Yoga is a 50-hour Supported Study exploring foundational nervous-system physiology and how that knowledge can influence the way we teach yoga.

Students explore stress responses, the autonomic nervous system, breath, sensory awareness, interoception, pacing, language, choice, environment, co-regulation, resilience, trauma-sensitive teaching considerations and professional boundaries.

The intention is not to turn yoga teachers into therapists or clinicians. Instead, we explore how understanding the nervous system can help teachers become more observant, responsive, inclusive and intentional in the environments they create.

By the End of Your Study

Students should be able to explain foundational nervous-system concepts in accessible language; understand how stress and activation may influence a student's experience; make more intentional choices around pacing, breath, sensory input and transitions; use language that supports autonomy and choice; recognize the importance of environment and teacher presence; incorporate nervous-system awareness into sequencing; understand professional boundaries; and distinguish yoga education from mental-health diagnosis or treatment.

To Complete the 50 Hours

Students complete 50 documented hours through morning practice and observation, manual study, assigned readings, independent research, written and practical assignments, mentor support, seminar development, movement-class planning and rehearsal, reflections and final assessment.

Your learning culminates in a 90-minute Nervous System-Informed Yoga seminar and a 60-minute movement experience that demonstrates how the concepts you have studied can meaningfully influence real-world yoga teaching.

The goal isn't simply to finish the reading.

It is to research it, question it, experience it, integrate it — and ultimately teach from it.

Come Back to Being a Student

You don't have to complete another 200-hour training to rediscover the magic of being immersed in yoga education.

Come back for a week -

Stay for a month.

Study beside the Caribbean, beneath the desert sky or beside a lake in the Kootenays.

Or stay home, make yourself a cup of tea, open your manual and begin there.

One course or several. Online or immersed. At your pace.
